Good Friday morning!

On days like these, when the morning and evening wind chill tells us that the winter is creeping up on us, we could enjoy another near sub-tropical, warmer weather affected by global warming that we are all in dire need to resolve. As Plato explained as part of the secrets of cosmos, the inevitable change of seasons is caused by the spherical Earth tilting on the axis. In the Northern Hemisphere we are living on, the three-month period of winter typically begins somewhere in late November or early December, although the time period varies depending on the location.

Passing seasons may change our moods and character like Russian national character is believed to have been affected by long, harsh winters. Some people use winter to suggest death, as in San Francisco-born Robert Frost’s poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” Some use it to imply the absence of hope, as in the Irish novelist Clive S. Lewis’s “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” the first series of the Chronicles of Narnia, which was adapted for the 2005 Disney film.

In order to weather winter blues, we need to gear up on winter warmers such as blankets, thick outfits, firewood, DVDs, books, spirits, beer, wine, and above all, water.

Meanwhile, many economists unfold their concern that the U.S. economy is on the verge of a recession. Goldman Sachs is giving higher odds to the likelihood of a U.S. recession in 2008 and has slashed ratings on a host of companies it considers exposed to slowing growth such as the entire auto sector, airlines, hotels, truckers, human resources providers, furniture, REITs, dining stocks, and base metals.

Also, the Federal Reserve report released on Wednesday suggested that the strains from a severe housing slump and a painful credit crunch are affecting the behavior of individuals and businesses alike, making them more cautious. The findings will warrant discussions when Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and his colleagues meet on December 11 to decide their next move on interest rates.

Above all, Larry Summers, former Harvard President and Treasury Secretary, wrote in the Financial Times, “The odds now favor a U.S. recession that slows growth significantly on a global basis.” He proposed a few prescriptions, including interest rate cuts but admitted that there’s no guarantee that a recession will be eschewed.


In terms of an economic outlook we may have to side with Summers. Even if there is no single silver bullet or panacea that will help us tide over the grim economic storm, we need to batten down hatchets by diversifying among different asset classes with the long-time horizon. Still, if you’re an individual investor, it may be better to not attempt to beat the market but invest in index funds, which merely replicate the performance of an index and charge much lower fees.

[A Tragedy or a Blessing?]

Years ago in Scotland, the Clark family had a dream. Clark and his wife worked and saved, making plans for their nine children and themselves to travel to the United States. It had taken years, but they had finally saved enough money and had gotten passports and reservations for the whole family on a new liner to the United States.

The entire family was filled with anticipation and excitement about their new life. However, seven days before their departure, the youngest son was bitten by a dog. The doctor sewed up the boy but hung a yellow sheet on the Clarks’ front door. Because of the possibility of rabies, they were being quarantined for fourteen days.

The family’s dreams were dashed. They would not be able to make the trip to America as they had planned. The father, filled with disappointment and anger, stomped to the dock to watch the ship leave - without the Clark family. The father shed tears of disappointment and cursed both his son and God for their misfortune.

Five days later, the tragic news spread throughout Scotland - the mighty Titanic had sunk. The unsinkable ship had sunk, taking hundreds of lives with it. The Clark family was to have been on that ship, but because the son had been bitten by a dog, they were left behind in Scotland.

When Mr. Clark heard the news, he hugged his son and thanked him for saving the family. He thanked God for saving their lives and turning what he had felt was a tragedy into a blessing.

Although we may not always understand, all things happen for a reason.

아침 저녁으로 부는 차가운 바람이 (어느새) 겨울이 다가오고 있음을 알려주고 있는 이 즈음 우리는 절박하게 해결해야만 할 지구 온난화의 영향으로 거의 아열대성에 가까운 포근한 날씨를 즐길 수 있었습니다. 플라톤이 우주의 비밀의 일부로서 설명했듯이 둥근 지구가 축을 중심으로 비스듬히 움직이는 것은 필연적으로 계절의 변화를 부르고 있습니다. 비록 지역에 따라 그 기간이 다르긴 하지만, 우리가 살고 있는 북반구에서는 3개월 기간의 겨울은 통상 11월 하순이나 12월 초순 언젠가 시작합니다.

길고 혹독한 겨울에 의해 영향을 받았다고 사람들이 믿고 있는 러시아인의 국민성처럼 계절의 변화는 우리의 기분과 성격을 변화시키는 지도 모릅니다. 어떤 사람들은 샌프란시스코 출신의 로버트 프라스트의 시 “눈 내리는 밤의 숲 속으로의 소요”처럼 겨울은 ‘죽음’을 연상시킨다고 합니다. 또, 어떤 사람들은 아일랜드 출신 소설가 클라이브 에스 루이스가 쓰고 2005년 디즈니 영화로 각색됐던 나니아 연대기 첫 이야기 “사자와 마녀와 옷”처럼 겨울은 ‘희망의 부재’를 암시한다고 합니다.

겨울의 우울함을 견뎌내기 위해서는 담요, 두꺼운 복장, 땔감, 영화, 책, 술, 맥주, 와인 그리고 무엇보다도 물 등 겨울 나기를 준비해야 할 필요가 있습니다.

한편, 많은 이코노미스트들은 미국 경제가 경기 침체에 접어들려고 한다는 걱정을 나타내고 있습니다. 골드만 삭스는 2008년에 미국 경기가 침체할 가능성이 높다고 보며, 자동차 부문 전부와 항공, 호텔, 화물 운송, 취업알선, 가구, 부동산 투자펀드, 요식업 주식, 비철금속처럼 경기 둔화에 취약하다고 보는 많은 기업에 대한 평가를 절하했습니다.

또한, 수요일에 공개된 미국 연방준비 이사회 보고서는 심각한 주택 시장의 불황 및 고통스러운 신용 경색에 기인하는 부담이 개인 및 기업의 경제 행위에 영향을 미쳐 양자 공히 더욱 조심스럽게 한다는 점을 시사했습니다. 그 보고서의 조사 결과 밴 버냉키 연준 의장과 그의 동료들이 회합을 가지는 12월 11일에는 금리에 대한 다음 조치를 결정하는 논의가 반드시 있을 것입니다.

무엇보다도, 하버드 대학 총장 및 재무부 장관을 지낸 래리 써머즈는 파이낸셜 타임즈 지에 “세계 경제를 둔화시킬 미국의 경기 후퇴 가능성이 크다”고 썼습니다. 그는 금리 인하를 포함한 몇 가지 처방을 제시하기는 했지만, 경기 후퇴를 피할 방도는 없다는 점을 인정했습니다.

경기 전망과 관련하여 우리는 써머즈(의 전망)을 지지해야만 할지 모르겠습니다. 우리가 무시무시한 경제 폭풍을 이겨내게 해주는 확실한 해결책이나 만병통치약은 없지만, 우리는 장기적인 투자시계 위에서 다른 자산 군간에 다양하게 투자함으로써 대비를 단단히 해야겠습니다. 하지만, 만약 여러분이 개인 투자자라면, 아마도 시장에 이기려 하기보다는 인덱스 성과를 반복하며 낮은 수수료를 부과하는 인덱스 펀드에 투자하는 게 나을 것입니다.

[비극인가, 축복인가?]

수 년 전 스코틀랜드에서 클라크씨 가족은 하나의 꿈이 있었습니다. 클라크씨와 그의 아내는 열심히 일하고 저축하여 아홉 명의 자식들과 자신들을 위하여 미국으로 갈 계획을 가졌습니다. 그 계획을 실천하는 데에는 수 년이 걸렸지만, 마침내 그들은 충분한 돈을 모았으며, 여권을 갖고, 미국 행 새 여객선에 전 가족의 예약을 했습니다.

전 가족은 새로운 삶에 대한 기대와 흥분이 가득했습니다. 그런데, 출발 7일 전에 막내 아들이 개에게 물렸습니다. 의사는 소년의 상처를 꿰맸지만, 클라크씨 집 대문에 노란 종이를 부쳤습니다. 광견병의 가능성 때문에 가족들은 14일 동안 검역을 받았습니다.

가족의 꿈은 부서졌습니다. 그들은 당초 계획대로 미국으로 갈 수 없었습니다. 실망과 분노로 가득한 아버지는 부두에서 발을 구르며 클라크씨 가족을 태우지 않고 떠나는 배를 바라보았습니다. 아버지는 자신들의 불행에 대하여 실망의 눈물을 흘리며 아들과 하느님을 원망했습니다.

닷새 후 스코틀랜드에는 그 우람찬 타이타닉호가 침몰했다는 비극적인 뉴스가 전해졌습니다. 침몰할 수 없는 배가 침몰하여 수백 명의 목숨을 앗아갔습니다. 클라크씨 가족은 그 배를 타고 갈 예정이었으나, 아들이 개에게 물렸기 때문에 스코틀랜드에 남겨졌습니다.

클라크씨는 그 뉴스를 듣자 아들을 껴안으며 가족을 구해준 데 대해 감사했습니다. 그는 하느님께 가족의 생명을 구해주고 그가 비극으로 느꼈던 일이 축복으로 바뀐 데 대하여 감사드렸습니다.

비록 우리가 항상 이해하지는 못 하지만, 모든 일에는 그럴만한 이유가 있습니다.
