Good morning!

Remember the stunning come-from-behind victory of Barack Obama over the front-runner Hillary Clinton in the Iowa caucuses for the Democratic presidential candidate nomination last week?

This week it was Hillary’s turn to surprise her opponent and supporters, and a large audience as well. She attained a comeback victory over Obama in the New Hampshire primary, as her husband, Bill Clinton, did in the same state in 1992.

An intriguing part of this startling outcome is that she gained votes from women, who deserted her last week, and independents and late deciders, who favored Obama.

While talking with voters in New Hampshire just one day before the vote, her voice quivered and tears welled up in her eyes. Such an emotional moment helped her, who has been seen as aloof, cold-hearted and high-nosed, appear more human.

In contrast, while delivering a speech to his supporters in New Hampshire, Obama on CNN gave a big grin and wore a proud look as if he almost got there in lieu of carrying his usual serious face. He was too elated with previous week’s victory in Iowa and the momentum confirmed by the leading public opinion poll with a double-digit margin.

All of a sudden, Obama appeared to get on his high horse, while Clinton looked engaging, warm and witty.


“Wait a minute! We’ve not crowned you yet. Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.” That seemed to be the message New Hampshire voters delivered to Obama, in my humble opinion.

Last but not least, forty workers, most of whom came to Korea from China to make a small fortune by doing dirty work in their affluent homeland, died due to fire and explosions in a cold storage warehouse in Ichun.

May their soul rest in peace!

John and Mary had a nice home and two lovely children, a boy and a girl. John had a good job and had just been asked to go on a business trip to another city and would be gone for several days. It was decided that Mary needed an outing and would go along, too. They hired a reliable woman to care for the children and made the trip, returning home a little earlier than they had planned.

As they drove into their home town feeling glad to be back, they noticed smoke, and they went off their usual route to see what it was. They found a home in flames. Mary said, “Oh, well, it isn’t our fire, let’s go home.”

But John drove closer and exclaimed, “That home belongs to Fred Jones who works at the plant. He wouldn’t be off work yet, maybe there is something we could do.” “It has nothing to do with us,” protested Mary. “You have your good clothes on. Let’s not get any closer.”

But John drove up and stopped and they were both horror-stricken to see the whole house in flames. A woman on the lawn was in hysterics screaming, “The children! Get the children!” John grabbed her by the shoulder saying, “Get hold of yourself and tell us where the children are!” “In the basement,” sobbed the woman, “down the hall and to the left.”

In spite of Mary’s protests John grabbed the water hose and soaked his clothes, put his wet handkerchief on his head, and bolted for the basement which was full of smoke and scorching hot. He found the door and grabbed two children, holding one under each arm like a football player. As he left, he could hear some more whimpering. He delivered the two badly frightened and nearly suffocated children into waiting arms and filled his lungs with fresh air and started back asking how many more children were down there. They told him two more and Mary grabbed his arm and screamed, “John! Don’t go back! It’s suicide! That house will cave in any second!”

But he shook her off and went back by feeling his way down the smoke-filled hallway and into the room. It seemed an eternity before he found both children and started back. They were all coughing. As he stumbled up the endless steps, the thought went through his mind that there was something strangely familiar about the little bodies clinging to him, and at last when they came out into the sunlight and fresh air, he found that he had just rescued his own children.

The baby-sitter had left them at this home, while she did some shopping.

존과 메리는 멋진 집과 사랑스러운 두 자녀, 아들 한 명과 딸 한 명을 가지고 있습니다. 존은 좋은 직장을 다니고 있으며, 다른 도시로 출장을 가게 되어 며칠간 가있게 되었습니다. 메리도 바람을 쐴 필요가 있어 함께 가기로 했습니다. 그들은 애들을 돌봐줄 믿을만한 여자를 한 사람 구하고 여행을 떠나 당초 계획보다 약간 일찍 집으로 돌아 왔습니다.

돌아와서 즐거운 마음으로 동네로 차를 몰고 들어가는 데 어디서 연기가 나는 것을 알고 보통 때 다니는 길에서 빠져서 무슨 일인지 보았습니다. 그들은 한 집이 불타고 있는 것을 알았습니다. 메어리가 말했습니다. “오, 그런데, 우리 집에 불이 난 게 아니니까 집으로 가요.”

그러나, 존은 차를 가까이 몰고 가더니 소리를 질렀습니다. “(지금쯤) 공장에서 일하고 있을 프레드 존스 집이야. 아직 일이 끝나지 않았을 텐데, 우리가 도울 게 뭐 있을 거야.” 메어리는 “우리완 상관없는 일이잖아요.”하고 우겼습니다. “당신 좋은 옷도 입었는 데 가까이 가지 맙시다.”

하지만, 존은 차를 몰고 가 차를 세웠고, 집 전체가 화염에 휩싸인 것을 보고서 둘은 모두 공포에 떨었습니다. 잔디 밭에는 한 여자가 고함을 지르며 몸부림치고 있었습니다. “애들! 애들을 구해줘요!” 존은 그녀의 어깨를 붙잡고 말했습니다. “정신차리고 애들이 어디 있는지 말해요.” “지하실에요.” 그 여자는 울며 말했습니다. “복도를 따라가다 왼쪽이에요.”

메어리가 만류하는 데도 불구하고 존은 소방호스를 쥐고 옷을 물로 적신 후 젖은 손수건을 머리에 얹고서 연기로 가득 찬 뜨거운 지하실을 향해 달렸습니다. 그는 문을 찾아 두 어린이를 붙잡고는 미식축구 선수처럼 한 명 씩 겨드랑이에 끼었습니다. 그가 떠날 때 그는 훌쩍거리는 소리를 들었습니다. 매우 놀래고 거의 질식한 두 어린이를 기다리는 손에 넘기고, 폐에다 맑은 공기를 가득 넣은 후 그는 지하실에 어린이들이 몇 명 더 있는지 물으며 되돌아 갔습니다. 두 명이 더 있다고 하는 데, 메어리는 그의 팔을 붙잡으며 울부짖었습니다. “여보! 가지 말아요! 그건 자살행위에요! 저 집은 곧 무너질 거에요!”

그러나, 그는 그녀를 뿌리치고 연기로 가득 찬 복도를 따라 더듬거리며 내려가 방안에 들어 갔습니다. 그가 두 어린이를 찾아 돌아오는 데 시간은 엄청 오랜 것 같았습니다. 그들은 모두 기침을 했습니다. 그가 끝없는 것처럼 여겨지는 계단을 비틀거리며 올라가는 동안 마음 속으로 그에게 매달려 있는 작은 체구들에게서 이상한 친근감 같은 것이 있다는 생각이 들었고, 마침내 햇빛과 맑은 공기가 있는 곳으로 나왔을 때 그는 자신이 바로 자신의 애들을 구해낸 것임을 알았습니다.

베이비 씨터는 쇼핑을 하기 위해 애들을 이 집에 맡겨두었던 것입니다.
