Good morning!

A new year is now around the corner. Are you ready for that?

Some people loathe looking back on the past days of the year with many regrets. They may desperately wish for a new year with a whole lot of happy lot.

Some people are content with the vanished days despite some glitches in the course of a year. Such unhappy instances were not life-threatening or even life-altering in their eyes. Yesterdays were all beautiful and a new day is dawning.

As the famous expression “Is the glass half empty or half full?” well demonstrates, an identical situation can be seen in different ways depending on a seer’s point of view: an opportunity or a trouble, or optimism or pessimism. It is all in how we perceive life. We can be one to either dwell on all the petty things or learn from them. The trick is to interpret life’s events with optimism.

An era of new administration armed with a philosophy of ‘Nothing’s impossible’ is unfolding before us. We may choose interpretations of its new policies in a way to make our heart sing and to give us the reason and the resolve to pursue our goals. Difficult and bad things will certainly happen down the road, but we’ve got nothing to lose except being unhappy. Further, we’ll eventually deal with them and move on.

I don’t know why but the lines in the last scene of a movie, “Under the Tuscan Sun,” starring Dianne Lane and Sandra Oh, strikes my mind.

[Things Aren't Always What They Seem]

Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guest room. Instead the angels were given a space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it.

When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, “Things aren’t always what they seem.”

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest.

When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel “How could you have let this happen!? The first man had everything, yet you helped him,” she accused. “The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let their cow die.”

“Things aren’t always what they seem,” the older angel replied.

“When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn’t find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I told him to take the cow instead. Things aren’t always what they seem.”

Sometimes this is exactly what happens when things don’t turn out the way we think they should. Just trust that every outcome is always to your advantage. You might not realize it until much later.

여러분, 안녕하세요? 즐거운 아침입니다!

이제 새해가 시작될 날이 얼마 남지 않았습니다. 여러분, 새해를 맞이 할 준비가 되셨나요?

어떤 사람들은 유감스럽지만 한 해의 지난 나날을 돌이켜 보기 싫어합니다. 그래서 그들은 행운이 가득한 새해가 다가오기를 몹시 갈망합니다.

어떤 사람들은 한 해를 보내는 동안 다소 언짢은 일이 있기는 했어도 지난 날들에 만족합니다. 그러나, 그런 불만스러운 일도 그들 눈에는 생명을 위협하거나 인생을 바꾸는 것은 아닙니다. (그들에게) 지난날은 모두 아름다웠고, 새로운 날이 시작되는 거지요.

“잔이 반밖에 안 남았는지, 반이나 찼는지?”라는 유명한 표현에서 잘 나타나는 것처럼 꼭 같은 상황이라도 보는 사람의 관점에 따라 다르게 보일 수 있습니다. 기회가 될지, 시련이 될지 혹은 낙관론인지, 비관론인지. 모든 건 우리가 인생을 보는 관점에 달려 있습니다. 우리는 사소한 일에 전념하는 사람이 될 수도 있고, 그런 일로부터 뭔가를 배우는 사람이 될 수도 있습니다. 비결은 살아 가면서 일어나는 일들을 낙관적으로 해석하는 데에 있습니다.

‘세상에 안 되는 게 어딨어’ 라는 철학으로 무장한 새 정부의 시대가 우리 앞에 모습을 드러내고 있습니다. 우리는 새 정부의 정책을 해석함에 있어서 콧노래를 부르고 우리로 하여금 목표 추구의 동기와 결의를 가지게 해주는 방법을 택할 수도 있습니다. (이렇게 긍정적 해석을 택하더라도) 언젠가 곤란하고 나쁜 일들은 반드시 발생하기 마련이지만, 불쾌해지는 것 밖에 우린 잃을 게 없습니다. 더욱이, 우리는 결국 그런 일들을 처리하고 앞으로 나아가야만 합니다.

왜 그런지 모르지만, 다이앤 레인과 샌드라 오가 주연한 영화 “투스칸의 햇빛 아래”의 마지막 장면에 나오는 대사가 생각납니다.

“… 그들은 기차가 다닐 수 있기도 전에 비엔나와 베니스 사이의 알프스 산맥을 넘는 철로를 건설했습니다. 아무튼 그들은 그 철로를 건설했습니다. 그들은 언젠가는 기차가 다닐 것을 알았던 것이지요. …”

[세상 일이란 겉으로 보이는 대로 만은 아닙니다]

두 천사가 여행을 하다 밤을 지내기 위하여 한 부잣집에 들렀습니다. 그 식구는 무례했고, 두 천사가 저택 객실에서 자지 못 하도록 했습니다. 그 대신 두 천사에게 차가운 지하실 공간을 주었습니다. 딱딱한 마루 위에 잠자리를 마련하는 동안 늙은 천사는 벽에 구멍이 난 것을 보고 그 구멍을 메웠습니다.

젊은 천사가 왜 그러느냐고 묻자 늙은 천사가 대답했습니다. “세상 일이란 겉으로 보이는 대로 만은 아니네.”

다음 날 저녁 두 천사는 아주 가난하지만 매우 친절한 한 농부와 그의 아내의 집에서 쉬어 가게 되었습니다. 얼마 안 되는 음식을 두 천사와 나눠 먹고 난 부부는 두 천사로 하여금 잠을 푹 잘 수 있는 자신들의 침대에서 자도록 했습니다.

다음 날 아침 해가 떠올랐을 때 두 천사는 농부와 그의 아내가 눈물을 흘리고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그들의 유일한 수입원인 우유를 생산하는 그들의 하나뿐인 소가 밭에 죽어 있었습니다. 젊은 천사는 화가 나서 늙은 천사에게 물었습니다. “어떻게 이런 일이 일어나게 하실 수 있습니까!? 첫 번째 사람은 없는 게 없는 데도 그 사람을 도와주시고,” 그녀가 비난을 했습니다. “두 번째 가족은 가진 게 없어도 모든 걸 나누려 하는 데 그들의 소를 죽게 하시니.”

“세상 일이란 겉으로 보이는 대로 만은 아니네.” 늙은 천사가 대답했습니다.

“우리가 그 저택 지하실에 머물렀을 때 난 그 벽의 구멍 안에 금이 쌓여 있는 것을 알았지. 그 주인은 너무 탐욕에 사로잡혀 있고 자신의 재산을 나눌 의향이 없었기 때문에 난 그 벽을 봉해서 그 사람이 그것을 찾지 못하도록 한 것이지. 그리고, 어제 밤 우리가 농부의 침대에서 잘 때 죽음의 천사가 그 농부의 아내를 데리러 왔어. 난 그에게 농부의 아내 대신 소를 데려 가라고 했지. 세상 일이란 겉으로 보이는 대로 만은 아니네.”

때때로 이것은 세상 일이 우리가 그렇게 되어야만 한다고 생각하는 대로 되지 않을 때 일어나는 그대로 입니다. 모든 결과가 항상 여러분에게 유리하게 된다고만 믿으십시오. 세월이 한참 지나면 여러분은 그 이유를 깨닫게 될 것입니다.
