Good morning!

The Boston Red Sox won the World Series for the second time in four years by beating the Colorado Rockies in a four-game sweep like an out-of-control freight train on Monday afternoon local time. Curse of the Bambino is history. They are not cursed by their past any more; they are blessed by their present and future. Actually, Red Sox president received a congratulatory call from US President Bush the next day. The Red Sox World Champion T-shirts are sold out.

Heroes among them are many. To name a few, John Lester, the winning pitcher in Game 4, underwent chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Mike Lowell, third baseman and the series MVP, is a cancer survivor. Their strong will power trickled down to other players and made a great difference in everyone’s play. The Red Sox have good young talent, great veteran leadership, an outstanding manager, a profusely supportive owner, and a great player-development system. Above all, they were all one big unit trying to accomplish the same goal.

While the Yankees owned the 20th century, the Red Sox are the first team to win two titles in the 21st. Some ascribe such achievements to the superb job done by the front office led by 33-year-old general manager Theo Epstein who became the youngest GM in the history of Major League Baseball at the age of 28 in 2002. Many Bostonians say it is Boston-born Epstein who crafted the Red Sox team that finally ended the World Series title drought in 2004 by employing the analysis of baseball through objective evidence and methods.

However, more believe the true hero and a calming force behind the Red Sox clubhouse is manager Terry Francona. He believes that it won’t work unless the players actually enjoy competing in a game of baseball. There always are a lot of ups and downs. There are a lot of times when it gets difficult. But in his mind, it’s special when he does it with people he truly cares about.

When Francona became a manager at age 32, his father, who played in the majors for 15 years, offered just one morsel of advice: “Don’t ever lie to your players. When you lie to them, they don’t trust you any more.” He never did lie, neither to his players nor to himself.

He is sharp and personable. His patience, faith, and belief in the players inspired them when things weren’t going well. We can induce what true leadership is, as we learned from Enron and Worldcom.

[When the Winds Blow]

Years ago a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the ocean, wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals.

Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. “Are you a good farmhand?” the farmer asked him.

“Well, I can sleep when the wind blows,” answered the little man.

Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man's work.

Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, “Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!”

The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, “No, sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows.”

Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away.

The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew.

[Saddest Story]

Bill, Jim and Scott were at a convention together and were sharing a large suite on the top of a 75-story skyscraper.

After a long day of meetings, they were shocked to hear that the elevators in their hotel were broken and they would have to climb 75 flights of stairs to get to their room.

Bill said to Jim & Scott, “Let's break the monotony of this unpleasant task by concentrating on something interesting. I'll tell jokes for 25 flights, Jim can sing songs for the next 25 flights and Scott can tell sad stories for the rest of the way.”

At the 26th floor, Bill stopped telling jokes and Jim began to sing. At the 51st floor Jim stopped singing and Scott began to tell sad stories.

“I will tell my saddest story first,” he said. “I left the room key in the car!!!”

[폭풍이 불 때에는]

몇 년 전 어떤 농부가 대서양 연안을 끼고 있는 땅을 가지고 있었습니다. 그 사람은 계속 일꾼을 찾는 광고를 냈습니다. 대부분의 사람들은 대서양을 끼고 있는 농장에서 일하기를 꺼려하였습니다. 사람들은 바다를 건너 몰아쳐 건물과 곡식을 엉망으로 만들어 버리는 광란의 폭풍을 두려워했습니다. 농부가 지원자들을 인터뷰해봤지만, 그는 계속 거절만 받았습니다.

드디어, 키가 작고 야윈 중년을 넘긴 한 남자가 인터뷰하러 왔습니다. “농사 잘 짓습니까?” 농부가 그 남자에게 물었습니다.

“글쎄, 전 폭풍이 불어도 잘 잡니다.” 그 키 작은 남자가 대답했습니다.

농부는 그 대답에 당황하기는 했지만, 일손이 급한지라 그 사람을 고용했습니다. 키가 작은 남자는 농장 일을 잘 했고, 새벽부터 어두워질 때까지 부지런히 일을 해 농부는 그 남자가 하는 일에 만족했습니다.

그리고 나서 어느 날 밤 바다로부터 바람이 커다란 소리를 내었습니다. 침대에서 벌떡 일어난 농부는 등불을 들고 일꾼이 자는 옆 방으로 달려갔습니다. 그는 키가 작은 남자를 흔들어 깨우고는 고함을 질렀습니다. “일어나! 폭풍이 오고 있어! 폭풍에 날려가지 않도록 물건들을 묶어둬야 해!”

키가 작은 남자는 침대에서 몸을 돌려 누우며 단호히 말했습니다. “싫습니다! 말했잖아요. 난 바람이 불어도 잘 잔다고.”

그러한 대답에 화가 난 농부는 당장 해고하고 싶은 충동을 느꼈습니다. 그렇게 하는 대신에, 그는 폭풍에 대비하기 위해 밖으로 달려 나갔습니다. 놀랍게도 모든 건초더미는 천막으로 덮여 있었습니다. 소들은 외양간에 있었고, 닭들은 닭장에 있었으며, 문들은 빗장이 쳐져 있었습니다. 덧문들은 단단히 고정되어 있었습니다. 모든 게 단단히 매어져 있었습니다. 바람에 날려 갈 것은 하나도 없었습니다.

그 제서야 농부는 그가 채용한 일꾼이 한 말의 뜻을 알아 채고 자신의 침대로 돌아가 그 역시 바람이 불어도 잠을 잤습니다.

[제일 슬픈 이야기]

빌, 짐 그리고 스캇이 함께 한 컨벤션에 참석하여 75층 고층 건물의 꼭대기 층에 있는 커다란 스위트룸을 같이 썼습니다.

하루 종일 미팅을 한 뒤 그들은 그들이 묵고 있는 호텔 엘리베이터가 고장 났다는 얘기를 듣고 깜짝 놀랐고, 그들 방에 갈려면 꼼짝없이 75층을 걸어 올라가야만 했습니다.

빌이 짐과 스캇에게 제안을 했습니다. “뭔가 재미있는 일에 집중해서 이 기분 나쁜 일의 지루함을 없애자. 25층까지 갈 동안 내가 농담을 할 테니 짐은 다음 25층을 올라가면서 노래를 부르고, 스캇은 나머지 25층을 올라갈 동안 슬픈 얘기를 하면 어때?”

26층에 도달하자 빌은 조우크를 하던 것을 멈췄고, 짐이 노래를 부르기 시작했습니다. 51층에 도달하자 짐은 노래 부르기를 그만뒀고, 스캇이 슬픈 얘기를 시작했습니다.
